RUTCOR 1: Go Ahead and Move the Art(s)
An exhibition in collaboration with the Center for Cultural Analysis at Rutgers University
September 2013

Description and Background

In 2013, the Society for the Arts of Corporation was invited by the Center for Cultural Analysis at Rutgers University, New Brunswick to undertake a series of collaborative installations.  These installations complemented the theme of the CCA’s 2013-14 annual seminar, “Objects and Environments.”

In July 2013, the Center for Cultural Analysis was moved from its original building to the RUTCOR Modular Building on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University.  The original building will be destroyed and replaced by a new academic building that has been planned and designed in a partnership between Rutgers University and DEVCO, a private, non-profit real estate development corporation.  DEVCO has played a major role in recent decisions about University buildings and land-use; the current building project is supported by a bond authorized by the voters of the State of New Jersey.

“RUTCOR 1: Go Ahead and Move the Art(s)” encouraged visitors to examine closely the objects and environments of RUTCOR, which were (and are) also the objects and environments of the University as a whole, and hence also of the public and of the entity we call the State. Many of these objects have no clear origin or destination but appear to be surplus materials whose relation to RUTCOR, and hence to the University, to the public, and to the State, is unclear.  Visitors were invited to study the materials closely and, if they wished, to manipulate them or add to them so as to compose temporary pieces that might be moved and installed in one of several common spaces at RUTCOR.  These compositions, along with any accompanying materials, were photographed, timed, dated, and logged by the Society and documented on the Society’s website as part of the evolving “personality” of RUTCOR.

Directions to RUTCOR

The RUTCOR Modular Building is located at 640 Bartholomew Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854-8003.  It may be reached by taking New Jersey Transit to the New Brunswick Train Station, walking to Scott Hall, and catching either the A or the H bus to the Werblin Recreation Center on the Busch Campus.  The ride takes approximately ten minutes.  Walk down Bartholomew Road approximately 100 yards and up the drive or through the back door of RUTCOR.

A bus schedule and map may be found on the University’s transportation page and at the website of NextBus, which can be bookmarked and which provides live updates of bus locations and schedules.
